The Music Psychotherapist

About

Jacob Wiles, MA, MSc, UKCP

Jacob Wiles, music psychotherapist, wearing a red and black checked shirt
Hey there, a warm welcome to you. I’m Jacob (he/his), I’m a UK based psychotherapist and music psychologist.

Making the decision to start therapy or seeking a new approach to wellness can be an important act of self-care. It might also be quite scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have questions about my approach to therapy, training, or my qualifications and experience as a therapist. This page will hopefully offer you some answers.

Formally speaking I’m a psychotherapist and music psychologist. Informally speaking I’m a trans, queer person who has navigated life via music. I process emotions through listening, regulate my mood through music and have previously used it in my own personal therapy. I’m striving to bring a more inclusive approach to music (so you don’t have to be a musician to feel welcome here!).

Education & Training
Specialism & Expertise
Personal & Values

I am a UKCP registered person-centred psychotherapist. I have a Masters degree in Person-centred and Experiential Psychotherapy (MSc).

Before becoming a psychotherapist I completed a masters degree in Music and Music Psychology (MA). That's when I found the words to describe the power and impact music can have on us.

After dedicating nearly a decade to research and training, I now combine these two fields in my therapeutic work.

I am a person-centred therapist, which means I trust that you are the expert in your own life and I work alongside you to create the meaningful change that you need.

I also have a personal love for music. Music has never been as accessible as it is today, at the touch of a button we can play music. Many of us listen to music on our best days and our worst days, songs can help us reminisce, connect us to others, or shut out the world when it feels too much. My passion lies in how we can use the music we’re listening to, in whatever shape or form that may be, to help us navigate our way through life.

As a queer and divergent soul, I've had what feels like a long and challenging journey coming to terms with who I am and what I want to be in this world. I am a proud transgender man and a pansexual human, these days I just call myself queer.

Who I am informs the kind of therapy I offer. I believe that being accepted and understood is central to meaningful and authentic change. So at the heart of my work is the desire to make space for you, exactly as you are.
